Car driver to face charges in I-81 crash and explosion that killed two commercial vehicle drivers, Virginia troopers say

Virginia State Police (VSP) responded to a double fatality crash in Frederick County on Thursday night.

The crash occurred at 8:17 p.m. on September 10, 2026, on I-81 in Frederick County, Virginia.

Troopers said that a car failed to yield to traffic while trying to enter southbound I-81 near mile marker 310.

“The vehicle, a passenger car, was then struck by a tractor-trailer that was heading southbound on the interstate. The tractor-trailer then went off the interstate to the left, through the median, and struck a northbound truck carrying oxygen tanks,” VSP said.

The crash caused the oxygen tanks to explode.

The semi truck driver died at the scene.

The driver hauling oxygen tanks was taken to a hospital but ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Several vehicles including a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office cruiser were damaged by the explosion.

VSP said that the car driver, who was not hurt, will face charges.
