California Highway Patrol East Sacramento is reminding truck drivers to double check the highest point of their load after a backhoe arm struck an overpass in California on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 24th on eastbound US Highway 50 at the Bradshaw Road overpass.
According to CHP East Sacramento, the truck driver did not properly secure the bucket arm of a backhoe before passing beneath the overpass, causing the top of the arm to strike the bridge. A 6 to 10 inch chunk of concrete was knocked off in the incident.
The bridge strike also caused oil to spill from the backhoe and onto the roadway, as well as onto a vehicle traveling directly behind the tractor trailer.
CalTrans later determined that the damage to the overpass was not an immediate hazard. No lanes were closed as a result of the accident and no one was hurt.
“Moral of the story: Be sure to secure your load properly and double check the high point of your load before setting off on your trip,” CHP wrote on social media.
