More than a dozen semis involved in 50 vehicle pileup on I-95 bridge in South Carolina

The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) responded to a major pileup crash on I-95 near Santee on Thursday.

On the morning of October 1, 2026, a multi-vehicle pileup occurred on the southbound I-95 bridge near mile marker 100 on the Orangeburg/Clarendon County line.

An estimated 50 vehicles were involved in the crash, including 15 tractor trailers, according to WCSC.

Eleven people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Northbound I-95 has reopened but traffic is slow. Southbound I-95 is expected to remain closed for an extended period of time.

Plan is in place and we are working to clear the bridge. Unfortunately it will take an extended period of time to do so. We are utilizing all our local and state resources. Please avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes. @theSCDPS @SCDOTPress @schighwaypatrol pic.twitter.com/oESy9IKVLK

The cause of the pileup is under investigation, but dense fog was reported in the area on Thursday morning.

This is a developing story.
