A truck driver faces charges after a major bridge strike in Midland, Texas, on Tuesday morning.
Shortly before 10 a.m. on October 6, 2026, the Midland Police Department (MPD) responded to the eastbound lanes of West I-20 at Loop 250 for a reported bridge strike.
Officers said that the overpass bridge at Loop 250 sustained “heavy structural impact from an over-height commercial vehicle.”
MPD investigators determined that Kurtis Bandy, 47, was driving a 2025 Kenworth T880 towing a trailer loaded with a forklift in the outside lane of eastbound IH-20.
“The cargo exceeded the vertical clearance height of the bridge, resulting in a severe collision,” MPD said.
Police said Bandy was charged with an over-height violation “alongside multiple Department of Transportation (DOT) violations.”
“Commercial vehicle operators are reminded to know the height of their load before traveling. Over-height loads can cause serious damage to bridges, create hazardous conditions, and lead to significant traffic disruptions,” the Texas Department of Transportation said.
