$1 million in liquid meth seized from semi truck's fuel tank during I-15 traffic stop

U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents seized hundreds of pounds of liquid methamphetamine during a traffic stop on a bobtail semi truck traveling on a California interstate.

At 11 a.m. on September 29, 2026, USBP agents with the San Diego sector conducted a traffic stop on a semi truck without a trailer traveling north on I-15 “approximately a quarter mile north of the California Highway Patrol scales.”

During the traffic stop, a USBP agent with a canine named Loki “led agents to discover characteristics of liquid methamphetamine concealed inside at least one of the truck’s fuel tanks.”

The truck and driver were transported to USBP’s Newton-Azrak Station, where hazardous response specialists were able to extract the liquid from the fuel tank.

“The recovered liquid tested positive for methamphetamine, yielding a staggering total weight of 962 pounds (approximately 115 gallons) with an estimated street value of $1 million,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said.

The truck driver, a Mexican national, was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations and local authorities for prosecution.

USBP seized the semi truck.

“This massive seizure of liquid methamphetamine highlights the lengths these transnational criminal organizations will go to smuggle hard narcotics into our communities,” said Justin M. De La Torre, chief patrol agent for the U.S. Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector. “The vigilance of our agents, the reliability of our K-9 units, and our strong multi-agency partnerships are vital to dismantling these illicit smuggling operations and keeping deadly drugs off our streets.”
