A trucking company and truck driver have been charged with multiple offenses after the driver was caught speeding in a traffic stop that revealed hours of service violations.
The truck driver was caught at about 9 a.m. on October 11th on Highway 11 east of Mattawa, Ontario, Canada.
According to CTV News, officers clocked the semi truck traveling at about 71 mph in a 55 mph zone.
“During the investigation, officers determined the driver had been operating the commercial vehicle in contravention of multiple hours-of-service and record-keeping requirements,” OPP said. “The driver’s paper records indicated the trip from Kenora to North Bay had been completed in 12 hours.”
A trip between Kenora and North Bay takes just under 17 hours by passenger vehicle according to Google Maps calculations.
The truck driver was cited for 12 offences, including speeding, exceeding 13 hours of driving time in a day, failing to take 10 hours off in a day, driving 16 hours since the last qualifying off-duty period and falsifying, mutilating, or defacing a record or document.
The driver’s company is also facing three charges, including permitting their driver to operate a CMV without a working speed-limiting system. The tractor trailer was placed out of service for a 72 hour period.
