Driver accused of “making up lies” during trial that got him 22 years in prison for slowed-traffic crash

A truck driver was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison on Thursday for a crash that killed three people.

The accident happened back in April on Interstate 71 in Delaware County, Ohio. Truck driver Modou Ngom was charged with three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and five counts of vehicular assault after crashing into a line of stopped traffic.

Investigation after the incident showed that Ngom fraudulently obtained his drivers license in 2003, and fraudulently obtained his CDL in 2007 using a different identity. He was then naturalized as a US citizen in the mid-2010s using the same identity he used to obtain a CDL. Ngom reportedly changed his name back to Modou Ngom in 2015.

Federal investigators also say he was cited for a brake violation in Kansas three weeks before the wreck for a malfunction of his ABS warning light. This information comes after investigators discovered that Ngom was also convicted of driving an “unsafe vehicle” in a crash involving his drive shaft malfunctioning, which was reported to state agencies, but was not included in federal records.

Ngom was found guilty on all eight charges in September. During his sentencing hearing on Thursday, October 29th, prosecuting attorneys accused him of “making up lies” during his testimony, reported ABC 6.

The judge sentenced him to a total of 22.5 years after considering victim impact statements, the severity of the crash, Ngom’s apparent lack of remorse, and his history of fraudulent CDLs. He has also been handed a lifetime license suspension. He will be eligible for parole in 2048, reported NBC 4.
