A truck driver is charged with murder after stabbing another truck driver in a rest area bathroom off of Interstate 80 in Wyoming earlier this week.
The incident occurred at about 3:27 a.m. on September 13th at the eastbound Bitter Creek Rest Area at milepost 144 along I-80 east of Rock Springs, Wyoming.
According NPR, a truck driver, who identified himself only as Singh, was making a stop at the rest area on his way to Pennsylvania when he was followed into the bathroom by another man. That man then attacked Singh and eventually stabbed him multiple times in the body and neck. The attacker was then seen by witnesses exiting the bathroom and getting into a red semi truck before leaving the rest area.
Singh was able to walk out of the restroom but soon fell to the ground. A dash cam on another tractor trailer was able to capture footage of Singh and the attacker walking to the bathroom, and the attacker walking out again. One witness captured video of considerable amounts of blood on the ground after the attack.
Witnesses called police and one family followed the fleeing truck driver east towards Rawlins until they were able to take photos of identifying information on the truck and trailer. Witnesses were able to offer police a description of the tractor trailer and attacker.
Troopers spotted the tractor trailer on I-80 near Rawlins at around 5 a.m. that morning and were able to stop the rig at Exit 209 near the Flying J. The officer confirmed that the driver matched the description and took the man into custody with no incident, reported Cowboy State Daily.
The attacker and truck driver was identified as 45-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak. He has been charged with attempted first degree murder.
Singh was still in the hospital with multiple wounds as of Wednesday, September 16th, reported NPR. “I am scared and also upset because I have [to] work regularly” he said of his time spent in recovery and out of the truck. Singh says the attack may have been targeted, and has him worried for other Sikh truck drivers.
“ I am just worried … it can happen again,” he said.
When asked about the potential motive behind the attack, the DHS told NPR that “Any attempt to blame DHS for an unrelated attack is RECKLESS and FALSE.”
The DHS recently posted controversial images to social media depicting Harjinder Singh, the driver involved in a notorious fatal illegal u-turn crash in Florida.
Police have not determined a motive for the attack.
The rest area has been closed since the incident to allow for the rewaxing of the floors after the use of chemical cleaners. It is expected to reopen Thursday afternoon, September 17th
