Both Ohio Senators are urging state and federal governments to halt the issuing of any driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
Senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted wrote letters last week to the state of Connecticut, USDOT, and DHS after an illegal immigrant with a Connecticut license caused a fatal crash in Ohio. Connecticut is one of 19 states that issued drive-only licenses for some immigrants regardless of immigration status.
The state of Ohio does not issue licenses, or even ID cards, to illegal immigrants.
“Not only do we not issue drive only credentials to undocumented immigrants—we do not issue any ID credentials of any kind to undocumented immigrants,” wrote an Ohio DPS spokesperson in an email to WOUB.
Governor Moreno sent a letter to Gov. Ned Lamont of Connecticut to speak out against its immigrant licensing policy, stating that Governor Lamont “should be ashamed of this policy and its dangerous consequences, yet your support for illegal aliens knows no bounds.”
Governor Husted sent his own letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, stating that the letter’s purpose is “to urge your departments to take swift and decisive action to prohibit state Departments of Motor Vehicles from issuing driver’s licenses to individuals who cannot provide documentation of their lawful presence in the United States, commonly referred to as ‘drive-only’ licenses. Currently, nineteen states and the District of Columbia allow illegal immigrants to obtain ‘drive-only’ driver’s licenses.”
“The ‘drive-only’ initiatives for illegal immigrants championed by state governments across the country are not merely lapses in judgment; they are extensions of failed immigration policies that place Americans at risk. Thank you again for your commitment to protecting the American people. I urge you to act swiftly to ensure that no other family is devastated by the consequences of these failed policies.”
Husted was recently involved in a controversy involving a political ad and images of the victims of a pile up crash caused by an immigrant truck driver who failed to stop for traffic.
